How Do You Measure Your Meaning or Purpose In Life?

June 19, 2018 By kwmccarthy

[This question in the blog post title was posted on Quora. Below is my response.]

Life is 100% meaningful so there’s no need to measure it. The simplest explanation is this, in the cosmic sense either life is meaningful or it is isn’t.

In some scientific manner, I can’t prove that life is meaningful. So it takes a leap of faith, not necessarily religion, to embrace the concept of absolute meaning. In short, each of us gets to choose our absolute worldview: either life is meaningful or it is not. Semi-meaningful isn’t a choice.

Given the choice of life is meaningful or meaningless, why choose coloring your life with the despair and hopelessness of the latter? Even when the current condition or situation or relationship appears meaningless, meaning is at work in the background waiting to frame it with hope and possibilities. It means being expectant and seeking it. The other option casts us deep into the darkness of the ultimate “living” void.

Purpose provides a more personal connection to the cosmic meaning of life. It’s our unique understanding of who we are and how we belong on the planet. Purpose, like meaning, is always present in our lives.

Where it gets confusing is our awareness of whether we are on our purpose–aligned with and giving expression to our purpose or not. That’s being on-purpose or off-purpose, respectively.

“Highest and best use” is a term used in the appraisal (measurement) industry. In times of “highest and best use” of the expression of purpose we’re apt to check the box and say, “Yes, that’s meaningful.” In “bad times,” we’re erroneously declaring, “That’s not meaningful.”

The measure of meaning, therefore, is relative against an absolute benchmark. In this sense, how meaning is measured is up to the individual to define their version of “highest and best use” and “lowest and worse use” and all that is in between.

The point is this: you have one life that is rich in meaning and capable of higher and better expression of your purpose. Your choice is free of your current condition or circumstance. Therefore, choose the life is meaningful worldview and you’ll inherently have a 100%.

Nic Askew’s Film: Freedom From Stories

February 7, 2011 By kwmccarthy

Being on-purpose sounds like a great concept… and it is.  There's a harsh reality to it in that it stirs up stuffed emotions and realities more easily tossed aside than faced head-on.  Delayed emotions inevitably rise to the surface.

I'm a fan of Nic Askew's Soul Biographies series.  This particular film features Brandon Bays and vividly illustrates the cost of living in emotional denial.  Men may slough this off as "just another emotional female."  Don't!  I'm convinced that heart attacks – a major killer of men – are no different than Brandon's tumor.  Manifestations of ill-feelings can result in illness.

While Brandon Bays is a New Age spiritualist, I have to admit a bit of a smile as I listened to her deepest truth to be right out of the ancient scripture from the Gospel of John (8:32).

Share your thoughts.  Also visit Nic's website and donate to his film making efforts.

When Chemists Laugh

November 20, 2010 By kwmccarthy

Cartoon by Nick D. Kim, used with permission: Check out his talent at: http://www.lab-initio.com

Everyone's sense of humor is quirky and unique.  I have to say, however, that Nick D. Kim's cartoons makes me think Gary Larson's of The Far Side fame is compounded with a brainiac chemist to produce offbeat cartoons that bring science alive with humor.

Candidly, I had never heard of Nick D. Kim, but now I think he is maybe one of the most famous chemists of all because he's bringing chemistry to cartoons and that's cheap medicine for the soul.

Be sure to visit his web site.

Thomas Alva Edison by Frank Attwood

April 28, 2010 By kwmccarthy

Thomas Alva Edison was my boyhood inspiration.  Sure, I admired professional athletes, but it was Edison who captured my fascination.   In elementary and middle school, I read every book about him I could find.

Six years ago, when my friend Frank Attwood, called to say he was thinking of doing a one man show portraying Edison, my ears perked up.  Turns out that Edison was a hero in Frank's childhood as well.  Since, I've had to the pleasure to see Frank portray Edison on several occasions.   It is really a joy.

Periodically, Frank and I connect by phone and talk Edison insights on life and business.  Frank's keen mind and love of research has uncovered Edison's remarkable wisdom, perspectives, and character quirks – and he was quirky by average standards.  Edison was known for his inventions, but his gift for business building is largely overlooked today.  Companies like General Electric, AB Dick, RCA, and scores of others were build on inventions from Edison's labs.  Frank bring Edison to life fully and smartly in relevant terms to my life and work.  Imagine tapping into his brilliance today to better inform your tomorrow.

Are you looking for a speaker for your next business conference?  Are you struggling with tapping into innovation and inventiveness?  Does your association need an entertaining, yet educational performance to inspire your members and help them see the world in a more positive light?   Please get in touch with Frank.   He's a businessman turned actor turned portrayal actor… and a fine man to boot!  Book Frank from his web site:  www.attwoodasedison.com.

Last evening I stumbled upon Frank as I was walking out a building and he was coming in to set up for a performance.  Quickly, I altered my plans and 40 minutes later I sat captivated by his Attwood as Edison performance.  Frank shared how Edison boldly stated that he would "Light Manhattan" and he did thanks to the vision and financial backing of J.P. Morgan.

Frank and I had this photo (below) made just in front the most modest of his sets.  I just had to share it with you.  You can see that Frank has a fair likeness to Mr. Edison (right).

Syfy: Why?

July 7, 2009 By kwmccarthy

SyFy LogoThe SCI FI Channel has changed its branding.  Check it out with this link.

At On-Purpose Business Advisors we inevitably end up in branding because of our core work on business design and strategy.   Branding is one of the first external expressions and places to create alignment with customers.

I had to laugh when I saw the new name.   SCI FI says it all.  Syfy – what does that say?  There are some names you just don't need to change.  That said, a logo update would certainly be in order, but to change the name at this point to Syfy is just plain stupid.   Perhaps they have some magic hidden up their sleeve with this new name.  I sense someone got paid a great deal of money to develop a new look and name.  Unfortunately, the emperor's new clothes made it through tight-lipped committee after committee for approval.

The new logo makes me think this is a Styrofoam cup business, a paper company, or a pharmaceutical conglomerate with some made up name due to some chemical compounding.  Certainly not an edgy science fiction television channel.

The good news is the execution on the web site is stunningly well done in terms of navigation, look, graphics, etc.  They've kept the traditional purple (outer space?) for highlights.  There is a lot there and they manage it nicely.  So kudos to the team that took what was probably given to them and took it boldly where few have gone before.

For now, all I can do is sigh, fyi.
