Often the most meaningful businesses are birthed from solving a
problem that touches us personally.  If you've ever met an insurance
agent whose father died early and the insurance policy left behind cared
for his mother and college education, then you've likely met a
successful and committed insurance agent.  Scars may mark us, but we
determine if they are distinguish or disfigure us.

Drive By Daniel Pink

I've been a fan of Daniel Pink's since I first read A Whole New Mind.  I've been reading through his latest book, Drive when this YouTube video came across my computer screen.  

In the late 1980s when I pioneered the On-Purpose approach I felt the truth of what was wrong with the current thinking in personal and corporate leadership.  At the time, I knew the concepts were ahead of their time.  In The On-Purpose Business I predict the Age of Purpose and Meaning following the Knowledge Age. 

Patiently, I've waited, watched, and worked.  So here I am 20 plus years later.  Along the way Jim Collins' books, Built to Last and Good to Great, validated the principles of On-Purpose with extensive research far beyond my resources and experience. 

Now comes Daniel Pink to share the importance of purpose in organizations.  I love it!  Society is catching up but still not quite there.  As important as purpose is, it isn't as important as being On-Purpose.   On-Purpose is the moment-to-moment alignments of living out the defined purpose.

With this caveat, I just love this video featuring Daniel Pink.  The more we get the word out about purpose and being on-purpose, the sooner the world gets to a healthier and more whole place.

The Red Ball Review Rule For Baseball Instant Replays

In light of the "perfect game" pitched by Armando Galarraga (see the video of the bad call below), is it time for Major League baseball to invest in the instant replay to review close plays?  

I say, "Yes, but on a limited basis."  Balls and strikes should ever be subject to review.  Just about everything else in the game can reasonably be reviewed to get the call right.   Jeff Leadbetter's article, How Major League Baseball Could Implement Instant Replay… Right Now, reflects most of my point of view.  I differ with him on a few matters: balks and catcher interference need to be reviewable.  Five minutes for review is way too long.  Baseball doesn't run with a clock, but let's give the umpires no more than 120 seconds to rule. Jeff Leadbetter's system of limiting the manager to the number of reviews per game makes sense.  Let's allow for the addition of one additional, non-cumulative Red Ball Replay for extra innings. 

Red Ball ReviewHere's my idea that is uniquely baseball.  Instead of a reg flag like football, I propose the use of an offical red baseball ball being tossed onto the diamond to call for a review of a play.   The manager would toss the red ball in the general area between home plate and the pitcher's mound before the pitcher starts his motion for the next pitch.

The Red Ball Review would add a measure of excitement
and anticipation to the game.   One of the side benefits of the Red Ball Review instant replay option is that it might just speed up the game because it discourages much of the managers' posturing with umpires on disputed calls.  Now they have to think before they burst onto the field in protest because they actually have an option other than being two inches from the umps face yelling and spitting.  This option remains, but it gives the Manager a true means to resolve the egregious errors by the umpire crew.

If the Red Ball Review rule were in effect, then Mr. Galarraga would be
in the record books as one who threw a perfect game.  Finally, I don't advocate that Armando Galarraga be awarded a perfect game.  I do advocate baseball learn from it and add the Red Ball Review. 

On-Purpose Persons of the Week Award

Yes, the record books will never reflect his "perfect game," but what we all witnessed from this historic baseball event was the behavior of two perfect gentlemen.  Character endures, accomplishments diminish over time.   Mr. Galarraga and Mr. Joyce (the umpire) will, in fact, long and best be remembered more for being models of behavior in this instance outside the lines than perhaps more anything that takes places within the foul lines.  That's why I'm making both of them my On-Purpose Persons of the Week!

Two Views of Human Nature and Work

The On-Purpose Approach attempts many things.  One of the most significant is the meaningful integration of life and work.  The On-Purpose Business Person opens with the quote below by Bill O’Brien, former CEO of Hanover Insurance Company, a pioneer in creating learning organizations with a moral core.

Two  ViewsMake no mistake about it, we are in the midst of this transformation.  The tough shift from industrial age command and control management to the knowledge age of employee engagement has begun.  I believe O’Brien understood that when a person’s heart is in their work miracles can happen.

The problem is rarely at the personal level, however.   People want to engage meaningfully in their work and they want their work to make a difference or contribute to the well-being of others.  Sadly, on far too many jobs, the ability to connect the dots between the work and difference making has too much distance between dots.  The big picture and greater vision is lost in the efficiency of a time motion study expert’s standard measures of physical output and production.

Leaders are emerging who recognize the power to be found in systematically being organized around “the effects of work on the person,” including the employees, customers, shareholders, and community.   This added dimension is messy because it doesn’t lend itself to the left brained measures of industrial engineering nor is this about social justice or welfare.  A business must create value and capture profit or it ceases to exist.  Business is not about the “objective view” or “subjective view” but the “integrated view”.  Rather than an either/or, this is a both/and approach.

The burden of business design falls upon the leaders of organizations to find the appropriate blend for their business.  Many people are hungry to engage in meaningful work that profits society and shareholders alike. It all begins with an awareness of one’s point of view.

The On-Purpose Business attempts to provide four simple “Pillars” to usher in the next generation in business design and organizational development.

Personally, should you come across an organization that is about creating “the wholeness of their people,” then run to that organization.

I’ve posted the above slide at the request of several leaders who saw my presentation, “Minding Your Business, On-Purpose” at the Take Shape For Life (now Optavia) Go Global Leadership Conference.  For two years I had the honor to be a keynote speaker and influence with their health coaches.

I know why.  In my decades of being a business owner and business advisory, TSFL gets the “wholeness of people” concept head and shoulders better than any business I’ve witnessed.  Their stock price reflects their integrated approach.  Dr. Wayne Andersen, Dan Bell, and Brad McDonald have created something truly special when they laid the foundations of this business… and it keeps getter better with time and growth.

When people and profits are aligned with synergy and meaning, growth is inevitable.  Are you prepared to step boldly into the twenty-first century Bill O’Brien predicted?  Are you ready to be on-purpose?

Kevin O. McCarthy Meets Kevin W. McCarthy

Lunch today was fun!  DSC00245Thanks to a mutual friend, Kevin McCarthy met Kevin McCarthy.  For the first time in my life, I signed a book to another Kevin McCarthy.

Kevin O. McCarthy (on the left) gets my vote for being one smart, straight talking, principled, entrepreneurial, and strategic thinker.  Wow! 

Kevin is a second term US Congressman from Bakersfield, CA, an agricultural and oil area.  His roots run deep in terms of integrity and leadership. I was profoundly encouraged to see a man of high character and practical business experience serving our nation. 

We need more business persons being about the people's business.  Government is big business but it is overrun with lawyers.  No lawyer jokes here.  I have tremendous respect for their training, profession, and role; but legal minds are contentious minds.  Business minds are trained to manage and lead with an eye toward creating value.

One day I hope to have the opportunity to vote for Kevin McCarthy for President or Vice President of the United States.  Kevin McCarthy is a winner… and not just in name only!
