Will You Have A Happy, Healthy, & Prosperous New Year?

January 2, 2018 By kwmccarthy

(This video was originally recorded in 2011. While the year mentioned is not current, the message shared is timeless.)

To kick off the New Year, I’ve gathered a handful of On-Purpose Minutes and Business Minutes relevant to the popular New Year’s toast for a Happy, Healthy, and Prosperous New Year. Rather than it being a mere sentiment, why not make it a reality or at least invest your self in making your good life even better?

Put your good intentions into action!

For each aspect of this New Year gesture, dig deeper by clicking on the provided links to relevant Minutes.

Happy On-Purpose New Year!
Kevin

A Happy New Year

Happy is rightfully a great word to be associated with New Year’s Day. Much like time itself, happiness is fleeting, yet so desired. Who doesn’t want to be happy? The term “Happy New Year” embraces the chronological odometer as it turns and makes a fresh start for 2018. Relish the reminder.

Comparing Christmas Day to New Year’s Day reveals an interesting shift of words and implications. We will say Merry Christmas, but the word most reverently associated with this Christian holy day is joy, as in the song, Joy to the World.

Joy can be one’s reality regardless of whether circumstances are happy or unhappy. Trading in happiness is a far less stable currency of emotion. Joy is the gold standard.

A Healthy New Year

Several years ago, this over-50 former athlete turned business advisor, author, and speaker was resigned to wearing “my fat suit.” This is going to sound awful, but I was so accepting of my extra pounds that I used to say, “Unless I have a cancer, I probably won’t lose this weight.” Ugh!

Fortunately, that changed in March 2008, when I was booked by Dr. Wayne Andersen (sight unseen) to be the keynote speaker at the Take Shape For Life National Convention. I did the program, lost the weight, and haven’t really looked back at my old weight since. Admittedly, the holidays are the hardest part for me because I get so out of my normal routine; it is a festive time, and I’m addicted to sweets.

Is Your New Year’s Resolution To Get To A Healthier Place?

January 3, 2017 By kwmccarthy

Do you identify with any of the reasons in this video for being at a healthier place?

A Weighty Conversation is a short 3 minutes packed with inner thoughts. Consider all you have to gain by losing weight. Don’t go it alone! Get a proven system. Get help, and get to a healthier place.

https://kevinwmccarthy.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/TSFLWeightyConversation2017.m4v

In the New Year, many of us ponder this fresh start with an eye toward the bathroom scale and losing weight. I called this condition “my fat suit” — an extra layer of Kevin over the top of my inner athlete.

Weight loss for many of us is a place in our lives where we’re struggling. Refusing to be resigned to the extra pounds is one thing; raising the bar on what it is costing you is another. Awareness and goal setting are important, but a system makes all the difference for success.

If a health coach forwarded this message to you, then by all means get back to that person to help you.

If you don’t have a health coach, we offer an affordable solution to help you keep your New Year’s Resolution to lose that 10, 20, 30 pounds or more … and keep off the weight. This is a health gain approach rather than just weight loss. This glass half-full approach is positive, proactive, and proven if you’ll allow us to coach you and do the program as it is designed.

We lead a dedicated team of health coaches, who come alongside of you so you can experience weight loss success and health gain using the Take Shape For Life system. For most people, this approach is cost neutral relative to your current food intake and the coaching is free. You may even save money!

Invest in a free consultation to explore what’s possible for your health and well-being. Call Judith at 407.927.1642 or drop me an email via this blog and I’ll forward it to her. I lost 50 pounds on this program in 2008 and have kept it off. I fully endorse it because it helped me to be on-purpose in my health.

Be On-Purpose!

Are You Making Half-Hearted Attempts?

March 29, 2016 By kwmccarthy

Seven years ago, the decision to quietly add Health Coaching to our services at On-Purpose Partners was made, and it has been eye-opening for our traditional On-Purpose® coaching work with clients. The difference is the “BS Factor” is so much easier to detect with health coaching — either the client is gaining health or not. It is literally right out front and easily measured.

The scales don’t lie, but we do. Recently, one of our clients shared that he came to realize he would look in the mirror and see himself as thin. At 6′ 2″ and over 340 pounds — and NOT playing in the NFL — he was deceiving himself. Therefore, with high integrity, he could “lie” to others about his growing health problems because he didn’t “really” have one. Denial is dangerous to our health and well-being.

I was just as guilty gambling with my health! For too many years, I would look in the KWM Before and Aftermirror and see all the “muscles” I had gained over the years. Who was I fooling? Today, I’m soooo thankful for my health that I can’t NOT share good health with others. Ah, the making of a zealot!

I still battle with a tendency to eat unhealthy because I, like so many of us, find that food = comfort, legal pleasure, and “control.” Sweets, especially carbs in the forms of ice cream, chocolate, candy, and bread are my old coping mechanisms. I can’t afford to be half-hearted about my health.

Half-hearted attempts reflect delayed decisions and unproductive rationales.

  • “I’ll get around to being healthy.”
  • “That hot fudge sundae won’t kill me.”
  • “If I don’t call that client today …”

God gave us a whole heart so why make half-hearted attempts with it? Your purpose is symbolized by your heart.

Here’s the essence of the problem: when we don’t know who we are, why we exist, where we are going with our lives, and what’s important, then we’re not right with ourselves.

This being out of personal integrity stirs unhealthy emotions. The vast majority of us “drug” ourselves to dull the pain. My drug of choice is sweets. For others it may be alcohol, shopping, gambling, exercise, drugs (legal and illegal), sexual activities, gaming, sports, and so forth. Running from ourselves only gets us lost further from where we started.

The result: we’re half-hearted, too busy, and spread too thin even as the spread is widening between who we are and who we’ve become.

Get in touch with your identity via your purpose, especially. Invest the time to also clarify your vision, mission, and values. You’ll be prepared to be more fully engaged in your life. When you better know who you are, you’ll discover half-hearted attempts are episodes in your life, but they no longer define your life. You are literally a better person!

When you more regularly have the benefit of whole-hearted living, then half-hearted attempts are seen for what they are — a waste. Either make a decision to go for it or not. Dithering is destructive to body, mind, and spirit. Choose your battles to win.

Show Up

I’m low on the shrewd scale. I too often take what people say at face value. It wasn’t until we had the health coaching business that I realized how much people say that they will do but don’t actually do it. Many are highly regarded colleagues, thought leaders, coaches, leaders, and professionals. It has been eye-opening for me to come to terms that it is about 50/50 between the dos and don’ts on commitments.

A friend taught us an expression years ago that Judith and I still use today. Here it is: “Mr. Say am here. Mr. Do ain’t showed up.” There it is in a nutshell! We’re overworked, stressed, getting fatter, and whatever other pennies we earn, we pay in pounds packed on the waist. When we don’t show up, the weight gain shows up.

Personally: Are you making half-hearted attempts to get healthy?

  • If a health coach forwarded this message to you then ask him or her for their help. Learn how easy it is to get healthy when you have a professional health coach guiding you. And then make the commitment whole-heartedly.
  • If you need a Health Coach, then email me and I’ll get you a free 30-minute consultation with one of our Certified Health Coaches.

At work: Are you frustrated with your half-hearted work?

  • Do you dream of starting a business where you can give meaningful and profitable expression to who you are?
  • Please email me to set up a time to visit so you can be more fully engaged in your life and work.

Are You Starting A Diet on Monday?

January 1, 2011 By kwmccarthy

Don't Diet!

"Diets don't work," flatly states my friend Dr. Wayne Andersen, the author of The Habits of Health and Living a Longer Healthier Life, and mentor in Judith's (my wife) health coaching practice.  Diets are short term decisions, not long term behaviorial and lifestyle changes so they don't work.

Don't Exercise Either!

Exercise is inefficient and often ineffective for healthy weight loss.  Exercise is important, but it needs to be in the right context of an overall program of health.

Do Invest 3 Minutes to watch A Weighty Conversation!

Below this video message is information to connect with a Health Coach of your choice or Judith.  Watch the message, then keep reading.

Do A Program, Not A Diet!

Your health rests upon making a better decision right now!

  • If your Health Professional or Health Coach sent you A Weighty Conversation, then get back in touch with him or her to help you.  They will guide you.
  • If you need a Health Coach, please contact Judith McCarthy.  Email her right now and you'll soon be on your way to a healthier (and happier) 2011.

If you are on Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, or high cholesterol medication or obese, be sure to consult your doctor. Your health coach will work with you and your doctor to get you to a healthy weight and lifestyle.  Don't take unnecessary risks!

Quotes on Health

"As I see it, every day you do one of two things: build health or produce disease in your self."

Adella Davis (1904 – 1974)

"Look to your health: and if you have it, praise God, and value it next to conscience; for health is the second blesing that we mortals are capable of, a blessing money can't buy."

Izaak Walton (1593 – 1683)

Now there are more overweight people in America than average-weight people.  So overweight people are now average.  Which means you've met your New Year's resolution."

Jay Leno (1950 – )

On-Purpose Profile: Michelle Aguilar

August 22, 2010 By kwmccarthy

Weight loss has a definite physical component, but there is so much more to being well.  Our heart and soul, however, are what's often eating at us and why we eat to fill the void.  This video
from the I Am Second series with Michelle Aguilar, a winner of The Biggest Loser TV show, provides great insight into the cause and cure.  (Click on the image below of Michelle to watch the video.)

After watching Michelle's story, continue to view many more stories of some famous and not so famous people and why they are second.

Kevin, How Did You Lose Weight And Keep It Off For Two Years ?

July 20, 2010 By kwmccarthy

Many people have asked me to reveal the secret to my success with losing my weight and keeping it off.  This On-Purpose “Minute” gives you the skinny on the keys to my weight loss, keeping it off, and staying at a healthy weight. Warning: this “Minute” is a bit different from what you might be used to seeing.

After watching the video, keep reading as I share my update and a surprising residual insight to this whole healthy experience.

OK!  So I had a bit of fun there with you in this On-Purpose Minute.  Hey, it’s the summer so it’s time to cut loose a bit.  Did you watch it all the way?  Hopefully, you hung in there with me and learned my many “secrets.”

From March to July of 2008, I lost 50 pounds.  Candidly, about 10 pounds have crept back on me here on my 2nd anniversary.  I’m in much better shape so I hope some of it is muscle weight – or is that a rationalization?  The tips I gave you work amazing well, if you apply them.

More importantly, I’ve learned a few things about myself, too.  Keeping a healthy weight isn’t nearly as hard as I imagined it to be.  Certainly my behaviors and habits are much healthier, yet there is still this unnecessary and unhealthy desire – call it an occasional lust – for sweets.  It isn’t a physiological need, but an emotional longing of some sort.  But what?

Some unmet need, hurt, frustration, or anger causes me to run to my drug of choice.  I’m working on understanding what the heck is happening and the pattern.  It mostly rears its ugly head at night.

Thankfully the weight loss and new habits have given me a margin of health, a fresh start, and a clearer mind, but there’s more work to be done on good (not so old) old Kevin.  By stripping away a pile of fat-boy producing habits, I’m getting to the root of my issue(s).  It is all good!

My prayer would be that you, too, get on a journey of healthy on-purpose living.  Your personal insights refine and enrich your life if you will go to them instead of running from them.  If you have a health coach, then work with them.   If you need a health coach, then please contact Judith McCarthy at judithmccarthy@cfl.rr.com to learn how you can do what I did.

Who Will Awaken Your Worth? Janet Cronstedt Will!

May 20, 2010 By kwmccarthy

Janet Cronstedt: An On-Purpose Person Profile

Janet Cronstedt is a dear friend and business associate. When she turned 50 she came to an On-Purpose Person workshop and wrote her purpose statement of “To the Glory of God, I exist to serve by Awakening Worth.” (Read her story here.) Since then, Janet has made more and better choices in her missions to be aligned with her purpose, moving toward her vision, and living true to her values. She’s the first to tell you it was a breakthrough moment in her life and being on-purpose is a high standard.

Thanks to Janet, I was booked as the keynote speaker for Take Shape Life Convention in July of 2008. I had the breakthrough of becoming a client and losing 50 pounds and having kept most of it off since. As a result of attending the convention with me, my wife, Judith, became a health coach with Take Shape For Life and is now helping many others get to a healthy weight and create the healthy habits to keep the weight off, often get off obesity medications, and be rewarded psychologically and financially. Janet provided our family with a breakthrough.

Janet is an amazing speaker from the platform because she leads with her heart. Invest 19 minutes and watch this two-part video from Janet’s speech at the TSFL Convention from 2009. You’ll find it inspiring, hard-hitting, and, most of all, one that awakens worth. Thanks Janet for being you!

Be On-Purpose!
