Great products deserve equally great plans, people, and promotions.
Have you heard the following?
"If a man can write a better book, preach a better sermon, or make a better mousetrap than his neighbor, though he build his house in the woods, the world will make a beaten path to his door." –
Ralph Waldo Emerson
"If you build it, they will come." Field of Dreams
These are two wonderfully romantic notions that have led to the frustration and ruin of far too many inventors, artists, and entrepreneurs. My lifetime love of business has taught me that some measure of strategic thinking and planning coupled with real marketing works. People need desire and
directions to the "house in the woods" or the "Field of Dreams."
Here are some simple questions to ask yourself. Be honest and true as you answer these:
- Who do I want as my customer? Why am I passionate about caring for this customer?
- How does my product or service serve their self-interest?
- What is the value of serving their self-interest that can be translated into a sales price?
- How can I reach them?
- What would they need to hear or read to be so attracted to my "house" or "field"?
Answer these questions and you will have a simple plan to learn to market your product or service… on-purpose, of course.
